School Games 2015
The School Games is a National School Sport Competition programme designed to motivate and promote physical activity to all young people in years 1 to 13 to get involved in a variety of ways regardless of their abilities.
Kade Gaskell is the ‘School Games Organiser’ based at All Saints and will support the coordination of the School Games available to young people within Dunstable and Houghton Regis. PE teachers in schools across Houghton Regis and Dunstable will have the opportunity to bring students to a range of School Games activities at a local level which then lead on to the county Winter and Summer School Games.

Sport, Health and Leisure Visit to the University of Bedfordshire

I was very lucky to get the opportunity to go to the University trip as a gifted and talented student in physical education. It was an amazing trip which opened many doors in my head for my future in sport. It made me realise how much sport can offer to an individual and how many opportunities there are, it doesn’t matter how old nor what gender. I looked at it from all different angles of the different topics in sport; looking at the heart, Body composition, Testing athletes, Environmental sport testing, and testing cells. I found doing sport science really interesting as we were in the lab. It all looked very good and it did make me think of what I wanted to go into in sport. I would love to go into sport in the future and I’ve taken GCSE PE so the opportunity is already opened I’m on the right track to getting to where I want to be. I will most probably take P.E at A level. I also toured the University and saw the rooms and the library, and also got told about the financial side of university as in living costs, accommodation, the course fees and more. We went into a learning room and a very successful man told us about his journey and adventures he has been on throughout his life and we also did a bit of practical. It helped us improve our teamwork and thinking skills. At the beginning we played a few games of dodge ball with the captain of the dodge ball team and he told us how he got to where he is now. Overall I really enjoyed my day and I learnt a lot from it.

The trip to the University of Bedfordshire was really interesting and entertaining throughout the whole day. They were all so nice to us and introduced us to everything they had to offer for the students who attend there. We played dodgeball with the captain on the dodgeball team. Then they showed us round their sports science labs, and introduced us to all of the equipment that they use and all the technology that has helped things like improve football. They have an environmental chamber which was able to change the temperature and humidity of the room. We were told how they perform experiments on muscles and how the body reacts to different things. We then listened to a man who has done many things like travel across Iceland. He told us about his experience and then took us to do a practical. We were split into two teams and had to get from one side to the other using equipment. This needed team work and we all performed this well. Everyone at the University was welcoming and gave us all the information we needed. It was a good day out and I would like to do more things like that.

RAF Band at All Saints
It’s not every day that an academy has a visit from the Central Band of the RAF but All Saints were delighted to host a concert on Friday 10 January, starting the Band’s new season of school visits together with the RAF Careers Service.
The Band performed a fun programme in front of the Councillors John Chatterley and Peter Williams (Town Mayors of Dunstable and Houghton Regis) and a hall full of students. The main hall was flooded with the sounds of military precision and professionalism as arrangements of songs from the charts, well-known tunes and even a medley of Nintendo themes were played by the thirty-two member Band, directed by Warrant Officer Dave Richards.
There were opportunities for audience participation as students yelled pop choruses as the Band played and joined the percussion section for a rendition of
Tea for Two with the Principal, Tom Waterworth, conducting.
WO Richards promised an entertaining programme and it was that and much more. We wish the Band well with its tour around the UK and overseas in the coming months and thank them very much for visiting All Saints.

British Legion Poppy Appeal
The traditional sale of poppies took place in late October and November leading to Armistice Day on Friday 11th and Remembrance Sunday on 12th November.
The VI form also raised £65.43 with a cake sale to add to the Poppy Appeal. Student cadets were well-involved at ceremonies in both Dunstable and Houghton Regis.
Many student families have links with the armed services and it is a poignant time of year for us all in which to reflect on the generosity of those who have given much in the search for peace and justice.

Race For Life
We have 13 students registered to run the Race For Life at Stockwood Park on Sunday 23rd June 2013.
The Academy has entered as a team and students have been able to use the Fitness Suite to train for the event.
Each student plus Miss Carey and Miss Flynn will be running 5K to raise money for cancer research, if you wish to sponsor the Academy you can do so via student sponsorship forms or by donating any amount through the Just Giving process.

Remembrance Sunday & Armistice Day
As usual, students were involved at the Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day Acts of Remembrance in both Dunstable and Houghton Regis through local uniformed organisations, as well as representing the Academy directly.
At Dunstable Priory on Remembrance Sunday Mr Grubb accompanied Jersey Villanueva and Saskia Davies who laid the wreath for All Saints.
A second wreath was laid at Houghton Regis on Armistice Day by Georgia Roberts and Saskia; the standard and guard of honour were provided by Army cadets Liam Bond, Owen Lindsay, Mark Wade and Jordan Miles, accompanied by Mr Waterworth and Fr Alasdair.
It is a moving time of year for many families and it’s encouraging to see how many local people from across the full spectrum of age ranges are involved with these ceremonies; the words and silence give us time to ponder the cost of past and present conflicts to ordinary people – ‘we will remember them’ – and the great value of even our imperfect peace.
British Legion local convenor and former Guardsman, Mick Hunt, warmly thanked those involved and said to us ‘the students are a credit to the Academy, their families and the community’.
When you go home,

Sport Relief
Target sports featured in activities for Sport Relief on 23 March when students were offered the opportunity of throwing wet sponges at some of the Academy staff for 20p a sponge. Mr Roberts took a direct shot to the head while Mr Barnard, Ms Lissaman and Fr Coles took their share of hits as well.
Chairman of Governors, Mr Wallace, got in on the act under the watchful supervision of senior students ensuring that everything went with a splash.

Kick Ash at All Saints Academy
All Saints Academy Pilot A Peer Led Anti-Smoking Project On Behalf Of NHS Stop Smoking Service Bedfordshire
Kick Ash is an anti-smoking project led by young people, for young people that has been successfully running in Cambridgeshire for several years now.
Following on from that success, Bedfordshire Stop Smoking service decided to pilot it in this area. We were approached by them and asked if we would take part and run the pilot at All Saints.
An Assembly was held and Year 10 students were given the opportunity to apply to be a Kick-Ash mentor. Training sessions with the Stop Smoking Service and Trading Standards, were followed by a busy six months spreading the “ Proud To Be Smokefree” message.

Islamic Arts Workshop at All Saints
On 21 November 2013 students from Sixth Form, along with Gifted & Talented Art students from Years 10 and 11, took part in an Islamic Art Workshop. They learned about the principles of Islamic Art and how it shows Unity – a key concept in Islamic culture. Many thanks to Anouar and Maryam from the Milton Keynes Islamic Arts, Culture & Heritage Organisation who planned and ran the sessions.
After a short presentation explaining what Islamic Art is, we were all given a template to trace onto tracing paper, which we then transferred onto tea-stained card. We then used acrylic paints to paint in the different shapes. When all the pieces were finished we put them together to create one large piece of work and it looked really good. Even though it was very time consuming and required a lot of attention to the detail I enjoyed the day and thought that the final outcome was worth it.

Seeing just how much cultures vary artistically was amazing and inspiring. Slotting all the pieces together to make a beautiful final piece is something I will keep in mind for my own projects in Art. I also learnt how some cultures use art to portray spiritual meanings and religious beliefs. I found the whole day fun, and learning someone else’s views on art was interesting. I never knew that Maths could be so involved in creative drawing and art; the way things in some art are developed using mathematical calculation is really interesting.

The High Sheriff of Bedfordshire Visits All Saints
Visit by Mrs Deborah Inskip, High Sheriff of Bedfordshire
All Saints Academy was delighted to showcase its new facilities to Mrs Deborah Inskip, the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire, on 12 June 2013.
During her visit Mrs Inskip was amazed at the excellent behaviour of our students.
The students themselves were very courteous and were asking Mrs Inskip about her role as High Sheriff, and were very keen to seek Mrs Inskip’s support in getting the Queen to visit our school.
Mrs Inskip said ‘I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and was particularly delighted to meet so many of your pupils and
staff. As they were all eager to claim, you have an amazing school. You are right to be proud of all you have
achieved since opening’.
