    Edexcel BTEC Level 1 / 2 First Award in Public Services

    Who is the course aimed at?
    This course provides students with the opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge needed to prepare them for either further education or employment in jobs and courses relating to the Public Services industry. To be successful on this course students’ need to have a keen interest in the Public Services sector and be prepared to work as an individual as well as a team.

    What will I study and do?
    You will complete four units of work relating to the Public Services sector and this will complete the First Award.

    Units include:
    • Working Skills in the Public Service Sector
    • The Role and Work of the Public Services
    • Public Services and Community Protection
    • Employment in the Public Services

    How the course is assessed?
    Assessment is 75% written coursework and 25% examination.  Three of the units are assessed internally through assignments and coursework. One unit is an external written examination.

    What jobs and careers can this lead to?
    The BTEC in Public Services (Edexcel) allows progression onto higher level vocational qualifications such as the Level 3 BTEC course in Public Services or onto an apprenticeship within the Public Services sector.
    Examples of careers that this qualification can lead to include: police force, fire fighter, community parole officer, paramedic, nursing or other roles in the local authority services.

    Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Public Services

    Who is the course aimed at?
    Students who have a keen interest in working in the Public Services industry.

    Entry Requirements
    Grade D or above in English and Maths at GCSE

    What will I study and do?
    In your first year of study you will complete five units of work relating to the Public Services industry and this will complete the Subsidiary Diploma. In your second year of study you will complete a further six units of work to complete the full Diploma.

    Examples of units include:
    • Physical Preparation, Health and Lifestyle for the Public Services
    • Crime and its Effects on Society
    • Fitness Testing and Training for the Uniformed Public Services

    How is the course assessed?
    All units are assessed internally through assignments and coursework. Edexcel is currently making changes to Level 3 BTEC courses and it is likely that written examinations will be added for students studying the course in the future; there are no known changes to the Public Services course at present.

    What jobs and careers can this lead to?
    Examples of careers that this qualification can lead to include: roles in the Armed Forces, Army, Navy, Customs and Excise, prison officer, parole officer, paramedic, Highways Agency, traffic officer, police force or firefighter.
